Pioneering Greener Funerals

More families are thinking about the environmental impact of a funeral, and it’s a completely reasonable thing to consider.

A traditional gas cremation produces a significant carbon footprint, and for many people, that doesn’t sit comfortably alongside the values they or their loved one held. Because we own our own crematoria, we can do something about it.

Memoria Funerals is part of the Memoria Group, the UK’s most environmentally friendly funeral provider, having led the industry in adopting greener cremation technology and holding more Greener Globe Platinum Awards than any other crematorium operator. We continue to invest in reducing our environmental impact across every site we operate.

Recognised for our commitment to sustainability

Memoria North Oxfordshire and Memoria Faversham and Mid Kent have both been awarded the Greener Globe Trusted Crematorium Platinum Award, the highest level of accreditation for environmental sustainability.

This recognition follows a thorough independent audit carried out by qualified sustainability assessors.

By choosing one of Memoria’s Platinum-accredited crematoria, families can be confident they are making a more environmentally responsible choice and helping to reduce their carbon footprint.

How we’re reducing our environmental impact

  • The UK’s first electric cremator: The Memoria Group became the first funeral provider in the UK to introduce an electric cremator, helping to substantially lower carbon emissions when compared with conventional gas cremation.
  • Leading the way in adoption: Electric cremators are now in operation at 27% of Memoria crematoria, including Faversham, Doncaster and North Oxfordshire. This is more than any other UK funeral provider. Learn more about our crematoria.
  • Mercury abatement: Memoria was also the first funeral provider in the UK to introduce a mercury abatement programme, helping to reduce the amount of mercury released into the atmosphere during cremation.
  • Biodegradable urns: The urns included with our direct cremation plans are made to be fully biodegradable.
  • Annual carbon review: We assess our carbon footprint every year and continue to identify practical ways to lessen our environmental impact.

If the environmental impact of a funeral matters to you or your family, choosing a provider that owns its own crematoria, and invests in the technology to make them greener, is one of the most meaningful choices you can make.
